Vocal Media is an online blogging platform. They offer writers the ability to get paid based on views. They also run writing challenges with prizes upto $5,000.
You might have seen the adverts on your Facebook feed claiming its writers make $6,000 per month.
I was one of their winners. I won $1,000 as a first place prize in their Slasher Classics Challenge.
I wrote ‘The Craft’ is Essential Halloween Viewing – it’s a film review and it’s the first post I wrote on Vocal.
Now, I’ve had a Vocal account for two years. I signed up one summer based on the premise of being paid to blog, but I didn’t touch the website until I came across a Facebook ad.
The ad said “write about your favourite halloween film and you could win $1,000” – or something like that.
It was the 8th of October. I was offered a month free sign up to their Vocal+ membership and a free t-shirt.
Vocal+ is required to enter some of the writing challenges on the site. It costs $9.99 per month or $99 for a year paid upfront.
My first attempt was accidentally deleted in the web browser. I wasn’t even sure I would rewrite it and enter, but thankfully I did. I also learned I should write my post in a word document before transferring it over in case of another accident.
The deadline for the entry was October 8th and winners were announced on October 13th. By the time the 13th came around I had forgotten about it and was just having fun with writing in the challenges.
From winning the challenge to receiving the $1,000 was 22 days. I was required to wait for an email from the service they use. I had to fill in two forms, one stating I don’t work for Vocal and the second was an IRS form for foreigners (which I technically am to a US-based company).
Do I recommend Vocal?
I would recommend Vocal but only for their writing challenges.
There are more challenges available to Vocal+ members; one per week. These challenges are often $1,000 first prize, $500 second prize, and $250 third prize.
They’re great to take part in, and usually not a lot of people take part in them. Roughly 200 entries or so per each challenge.
I’m not sure why they don’t have more entries, but I predict this will grow, especially with the way they’re running ads on Facebook.
Also, you’re not limited by how many entries you can have either.
By my estimations, you have a 1 in 200 chance of winning.
You also earn from page reads too, however Vocal’s methods of calculating reads is a little grey. If you’re a Vocal+ member they pay $6 per 1000 reads, if you’re not, they pay $3.80 per 1000 reads.
I would not recommend Vocal for their page reads. If you want a better rate of pay and more accurate read calculations then I would recommend using Medium.
